KEPHIS Board Strengthens Seed Quality and Plant Health During Trans Nzoia Visit

Focused on seed quality, land protection, and phytosanitary collaboration at Kenya’s key agricultural frontiers, the KEPHIS Board of Directors, led by Chairman Hon. Joseph M’Eruaki, and a section of management led by MD Professor Theophilus Mutui continued its nationwide tour with a two-day visit to Trans Nzoia County, a key region in Kenya’s food and seed production landscape.

On 21st July, the Board visited the Suam One Stop Border Post, where it met with the Border Management Committee (BMC) and key stakeholders to assess phytosanitary interventions that support safe trade, pest surveillance, and cross-border compliance. The team also toured ADC maize farms, a critical player in early generation seed multiplication, and later engaged with Kenya Seed Company’s board and management alongside other registered seed sector players to discuss quality assurance, seed variety development, and regulatory alignment.

On 22nd July, the Board paid a courtesy call to the County Commissioner of Trans Nzoia, where discussions centered on collaborative strategies to reclaim public land allocated to KEPHIS but currently under encroachment. Working closely with the National Government Administrative Officers (NGAO) and the National Land Commission, KEPHIS aims to restore institutional land for research, regulatory, and public service functions critical to the seed sector and national food security.

This tour reinforces KEPHIS’ mandate to safeguard Kenya’s agriculture through rigorous seed certification, border phytosanitary controls, and stakeholder collaboration, while ensuring that the institutional environment remains protected and fit for service delivery.
