Kenya joined the global community in observing World Desertification and Drought Day 2026

Recognize. Respect. Restore.
On 17th June 2026, Kenya joined the global community in observing World Desertification and Drought Day 2026 at Vipingo Central Primary School, Kilifi County, under the theme: “Rangelands: Recognize. Respect. Restore.”
The global observance highlighted the critical role of rangelands in supporting livelihoods, enhancing food and water security, conserving biodiversity, and strengthening resilience against climate change.
The event, graced by the Chief Guest, H.E Prof. Kithure Kindiki, Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya, brought together national and international leaders, including representatives from the United Nations and environmental partners, to reflect on the urgent need for sustainable land management and restoration.

The Deputy President called on Kenyans to translate environmental conservation commitments into action, emphasizing the importance of protecting rangelands and recognizing the contribution of the ongoing 15 Billion Tree Growing Campaign in restoring ecosystems across the country.
As Kenya’s National Plant Protection Organization, Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Service (KEPHIS) continues to champion sustainable agricultural systems, safeguard plant health, and support initiatives that promote land restoration, biodiversity conservation, and climate resilience.
Through collaboration, innovation, and responsible stewardship of natural resources, we endeavour to restore degraded landscapes and secure a greener, more food-secure Nation for generations to come.
Let us recognize the value of our rangelands, respect their role in sustaining life, and restore them for a resilient tomorrow.
