KEPHIS Board Tour- Strengthening Regional Oversight for Food Security and Safe Trade

On 23rd July 2025, the KEPHIS Board of Directors visited the Kisumu Regional Office, where they held a staff engagement session and toured the Kisumu Port Pier, managed by the Kenya Ports Authority. At the pier, KEPHIS maintains a strategic presence to inspect and certify plant products entering or exiting the country—enhancing phytosanitary controls and facilitating safe trade through western Kenya’s lake transport corridor.

On 24th July, the Board paid a courtesy call to the Governor of Bomet County. Discussions focused on strengthening collaboration with the County Government to promote food security through key areas: ensuring that only certified seeds are sold to farmers by registered stockists, enhancing pest surveillance across the county, and reinforcing phytosanitary measures for major export crops such as tea. These efforts aim to protect export markets and uphold regulatory standards at the county level.

Later in the day, the Board toured a large-scale wheat seed grower in Narok County Naropil, Ololunga farm, where KEPHIS provides certification services to ensure the production of high-quality wheat seed varieties. This support enables farmers to access quality-assured planting material for improved yields.
