Training on Advanced Technologies for Plant Pest Surveillance
KEPHIS has today officially kicked off a five-day training on Advanced Technologies for Plant Pest Surveillance, supported by TradeMark Africa (TMA) in Pride Inn Azure, Westlands. The training, scheduled for 17th–21st August 2026, is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the capacity of KEPHIS inspectors in the application of modern technologies for effective plant pest surveillance.
The training officially opened by Dr. Isaac Macharia, Director, Phytosanitary and Biosecurity, is important as it equips KEPHIS inspectors with practical knowledge and skills to use advanced technologies to detect, monitor and respond to plant pests more efficiently and accurately.

By strengthening these capabilities, KEPHIS can enhance early detection of emerging and invasive pests, improve the quality and timeliness of surveillance data, and support faster decision-making and response.

For KEPHIS inspectors, adopting modern surveillance technologies will also improve field efficiency, accuracy and coverage, enabling them to monitor plant health threats across different regions more effectively. This is critical in protecting Kenya’s agricultural resources, supporting food security and safeguarding access to local and international markets. Through continuous capacity building and the adoption of innovative technologies, KEPHIS is strengthening its ability to stay ahead of evolving plant health threats and deliver effective plant health services to farmers and other stakeholders.
